Director Anubhav Sinha's webseries 'IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack' for Netflix is based on a true incident that took place in December 1999. Terrorists hijacked Indian Airlines flight number IC 814 from Kathmandu, Nepal to New Delhi. The plane was diverted to Kandahar, Afghanistan via various locations. The terrorists made demands against the then Vajpayee government and the Indian government had to accept the demands of the terrorists in exchange for the lives of its passengers. One of these demands was the release of three terrorists – Maulana Masood Azhar, Omar Saeed Sheikh and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar. These three terrorists were in jail in India at that time. After these terrorists were released, they carried out attacks in India and continued to terrorize. In particular, Masood Azhar carried out the attack on Parliament in 2001, attack on Mumbai in 2008, Pathankot attack in 2016 and Pulwama attack in 2019. What is the fact? According to a statement issued by the Union Home Ministry on January 6, 2000, the real names of the hijackers were: The External Affairs Ministry statement said that the hijackers had given themselves the code names of the passengers on board the hijacked plane – Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola and Shankar. But after the release of the webseries, people, especially Hindu organizations, are alleging that the filmmakers have changed the religion of the terrorists and tried to hide the real identity of the terrorists. What is the story of the series? The story of this series is based on the true incident of December 24, 1999. Five terrorists hijacked Indian Airlines flight IC 814 while en route to New Delhi from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport. In which 176 passengers were travelling. Terrorists take the plane to Kandahar via Amritsar, Lahore, Dubai. The passengers were held hostage for seven days. What is the condition of the passengers inside the plane during this period? What happens to their families? What conditions are placed before the government to release these passengers? How is the government forced to accept the terrorists' terms? All this is shown in this series. What is the premise of a webseries? Anubhav Sinha, the director for Netflix, took a book reference. The flight captain at that time was Devi Sharan, who wrote a book together with journalist Srijoy Chaudhary – 'Flight in Fear: The Captain's Story'. A web series has been made based on the stories quoted in this book. It is also written in the book that the code names of the terrorists were Chief, Doctor, Burger, Shankar and Bhola. What steps did the central government take? The names Shankar and Bhola on the web series 'IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack' sparked controversy and started a boycott trend on social media. With the central government also taking a drastic step, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has sent a summons to Netflix India's Content Head Monica Shergill. The ministry has sought an explanation from Netflix regarding the name dispute. Who said what on the controversy? Know what was the Kandahar plane hijack incident… The hijacking of Indian Airlines IC 814 was surrounded by the Taliban and the plane terrorists demanded was released. The film 'Emergency' is also controversial. The film was scheduled to release in theaters on September 6, but the censor board withdrew the certificate, so it will not be released. Kangana tweeted that everything is allowed to be shown on the OTT platform. There is all freedom. Here you can grind everything with factual error but why is there any objection to allow such films which show the unity and integrity of India? Censorship is only for a few people in the country, it seems. Tune in Monday to Friday at 8 PM Editor's View… (Research: Yashpal Bakshi)
