'Dimple was a star before films': Driving around in a luxury car from the start, Rishi Kapoor recounts the story of debut film 'Bobby'

Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor made their debut with the film 'Bobby' released in 1973. Despite the new faces, the film became a hit. After the success of this film, both became famous overnight. During this film, Rishi was 21 years old while Dimple was only 16 years old. In an old interview, Rishi Kapoor narrated an incident related to his first film. He said that from the beginning, Dimple used to drive around in big and luxury cars, while she and Amitabh Bachchan had a Fiat car.

Meanwhile, the shooting of Amitabh Bachchan's film 'Bombay to Goa' was going on, so he often told me that your heroine comes in a very big car. When in those days Amitji used to come in a Fiat and we also had an old Fiat.

Dimple called herself a star Rishi said, we used to harass Dimple. And she used to tell us that I am Raj Kapoor's heroine, I am a star. Rishi said that Dimple used to say with confidence that even if the film becomes a hit, I am a star and even if it doesn't, I am a star. That's why I travel in a big car. Rishi said, now that I look back I think Dimple was right, she is a star.

Both Neetu Singh and Dimple played 'Bobby'. Auditioned for the film Both Neetu Singh and Dimple Kapadia auditioned for the film 'Bobby'. However, Raj Kapoor chose Dimple Kapadia. In an interview to Times of India, senior film analyst Dilip Thakur said that Neetu Singh's mother Raji wanted to launch her daughter as a lead actress in Raj Kapoor's film. But, the filmmaker refused, as she had done some films as a child actress. However, later Neetu Singh married Rishi Kapoor.

But Rishi Kapoor later told Bollywood Hungama that 'Bobby' was a film that was made to save Raj Kapoor, as his studio was in foreclosure. Raj Kapoor made 'Mera Naam Joker' on a huge budget and had high expectations from the film. The film didn't do well when it was released, leaving Raj Kapoor with huge losses and huge debts, so he launched his son Rishi and made the film 'Bobby'.
