If Team India can't win the Champions Trophy then head coach Gautam Gambhir can be removed. Not only this, the Champions Trophy will also decide the careers of Rohit and Virat Kohli.
Gambhir is also being criticized after losing the Test series against New Zealand at home and the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. His future was discussed at the BCCI review meeting.
According to a PTI report, the decision regarding Gambhir's coaching career now depends entirely on the outcome of the upcoming ICC tournament.
India lost 3 series under Gambhir's coaching Gautam Gambhir took over as the head coach of Team India in August last year. Under his coaching, the team managed to win only 2 T-20 series and one Test series against Bangladesh. During this period, India had to lose the Test series against New Zealand and Australia as well as the ODI series in Sri Lanka.
According to reports, Gambhir wants to eradicate the superstar culture from the team. Even senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma looked out of form under his coaching. After which the speculations of retirement of both of them also gained momentum. It is believed that some issues were discussed between the senior players and Gambhir after losing the series 1-3 in Australia.
Gambhir's career may end before the contract A senior BCCI source told PTI, 'If Team India does not perform well in the Champions Trophy, the coach's career may also end. His contract runs until the 2027 World Cup, but if he doesn't produce better results, he could be released before the contract.
Results are very important in sports and Gambhir has not produced very good results in his short coaching career. The BCCI also held a review meeting after the team's performance in Australia. It was revealed that serious and senior players had different opinions.
Gambhir wants to destroy superstar culture A BCCI source said, 'Gambir is focusing on eradicating the superstar culture of Team India. He also took drastic measures to eliminate him, which was not liked by the senior players.
The source also said-
When Gambhir was the captain of the Delhi Ranji Trophy team, the team had to play its home matches at the Roshan-Ara ground. The ground was located in the north-west of Delhi, where the pitch was conducive to fast bowlers. Then the senior Indian player of the team said that the team should play at Jamia Millia Islamia ground. Because the big player's house was near Jamia Maidan. Gambhir did not accept his wish and now he wants to end this culture in Team India as well.
Gambhir Star was not happy with the demands of the players According to PTI, during the Australia tour, some star players gave their preference for hotels and practice time, which Gambhir did not like. On the other hand, issues of communication gap between senior players and Gambhir also came up.
The selection committee is also seriously upset According to the report, some members of the National Selection Committee are also seriously upset. They don't want Gambhir to dominate the team selection. A former selector has even said that Gambhir's approach is similar to that of former coach Greg Chappell.
Chappell became the coach of Team India in 2005. The senior players also did not like his coaching style, after which there were rumors of a rift between the players and the coach. Indian cricket was on the back foot when Chappell quit coaching.
Gambhir's assistant was present with the selection committee A BCCI official said that the board is also upset that Gambhir's personal assistant was present at the selection committee in Australia. Gambhir's PA accompanied the selectors wherever they went. Due to which the selectors could not discuss openly. Why was the personal assistant put up in a hotel with the team members?
Gautam Gambhir's manager Gaurav Arora (left) was seen hanging out with the selectors during the Australia tour. Action can also be taken against him.
Champions Trophy from 19th February One thing that is clear from the BCCI official's point of view is that the board is not very impressed with Gambhir and his methods. The Champions Trophy will start from February 19 and will continue till March 9. After this IPL will start.
Team India will travel to England in June and play a 5 test match series. That means if Gambhir is removed after the Champions Trophy, the board will have about 3 months to select a new coach.
