Impeachment voting has begun in South Korea to remove President Yoon Suk-yeol. On December 3, President Yoon imposed martial law in the country after accusing the opposition party of colluding with North Korea and engaging in anti-national activities.
Taking action against him, the opposition brought an impeachment motion against him. 200 votes would be needed to remove President Yun from office. Opposition parties have 192 MPs, which means they also need 8 votes from the ruling party.
However, 107 of the ruling party's 108 MPs walked out of the House ahead of the impeachment vote on Saturday. Out of which 3 MPs have returned. On the other hand, the crowd outside the Parliament is chanting slogans asking the ruling party MPs to return to the House.
According to the New York Times, the voting process in the House has slowed down a bit. In fact, the Speaker hopes that some more MPs from the ruling party may return to vote against the President. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have said that if the impeachment motion fails today, they will re-introduce it on Wednesday.
The President bowed his head and apologized for martial law
Meanwhile, President Yoon Suk-yeol has apologized to the country for imposing martial law. He bowed his head on live TV and condemned the imposition of martial law in front of the public as wrong. However, he did not announce his resignation. While presenting his party he said-
I did not take the decision to impose martial law for political or legal reasons, rather the decision was taken out of desperation.
Voting also in matters related to the President's wife In addition to the impeachment of the President, the South Korean House of Representatives is also voting on the issue related to his wife's corruption. In fact, South Korea's first lady has been accused of manipulating stock prices in the Korean stock market 13 years ago. Now the opposition wants a separate prosecutor to be appointed to probe the matter, for which voting is underway.

Elections must be held within 60 days after the President leaves office If Yun steps down before the end of his five-year term in May 2027, the constitution requires a presidential election to be held within 60 days.
If the impeachment motion is passed in parliament, Yun will be prosecuted in court. Where the proposal will be proved by the vote of 6 out of 9 judges. South Korean courts currently have only 6 judges, so it is unclear whether the case will proceed without 7 judges.
The President imposed martial law, lifting the protests within 6 hours The political crisis in South Korea began when the president announced martial law on December 3. After this, protests started taking place across the country and chaos ensued.

Protests have erupted in South Korea just hours after martial law was lifted. Demonstrators are demanding the resignation of President Eun Suk Yeol. South Korea's six opposition parties have jointly tabled an impeachment motion against President Eun Suk Yeol on Wednesday.
Why did President Yole need to impose martial law? There are a total of 300 seats in South Korea's parliament. In the elections held earlier this year, the people gave a massive mandate to the opposition party DPK. The ruling People Power got only 108 seats, while the opposition party DPK got 170 seats. Being in the majority, the opposition party DPK was interfering more in the functioning of the President's government and could not work according to their agenda.
President Yol won the election in 2022 by a slim margin. After this his popularity began to decline. His image was also affected as his wife was embroiled in several controversies. The president currently has a popularity rating of about 17%, the lowest of all presidents in the country. To counter all this the President imposed martial law.

The president's credibility was tarnished after he received a luxury brand bag as a gift from his wife and first lady, Kim Keon. In fact, earlier this year a YouTuber leaked a video in which the President's wife was seen receiving an expensive gift from a priest. This video was shot with a spy camera.
The bag belonged to the Christian Dior company, which is said to cost 2 lakh Indian rupees. He started getting criticized in the country for taking such an expensive gift. It is illegal in South Korea for anyone holding a public position (including family) to receive a gift worth more than 1 million Korean won (60 thousand rupees).
After this, President Yoo had to apologize on national television. However, he refused to undergo the investigation.
