Essar Group Co-Founder Shashi Ruia Passes Away: Shashi, who was 80 years old, will leave the funeral procession from Ruia House at 4 pm

Essar Group co-founder Shashi Ruia passed away on November 25, 2024. He was 80 years old. Shashi Ruia's mortal remains will be kept at Ruia House on November 26 from 1 to 3 pm. The funeral procession will leave Ruia House at 4 pm for Hindu Worli Crematorium.

A first generation entrepreneur, Shashi started his career in 1965 under the guidance of his father, Nand Kishore Ruia. In 1969 Shashi's brother Ravi Ruia founded the Essar Group. The company started its operations with the construction of outer breakwater at Chennai Port.

PM Modi condoled his death

Condoling Ruia's demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was a great personality in the industry. He said his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence transformed India's business landscape. He described his demise as extremely sad. “He also set high standards for innovation and development. He was always full of ideas and always discussing how we can make our country better,” he wrote on the X post.

Ruia was also in national organizations and industry associations

Ruia was a member of several important national organizations and industry associations. He was on the Managing Committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). He has also been the Chairman of India-US Joint Business Council. Ruia was a member of the Prime Minister's India-US CEO Forum and the India-Japan Business Council.

Essar Group's business is spread across more than 50 countries

According to the company's official website, the company's business is spread across more than 50 countries. The company operates in Energy, Metals & Mining, Infrastructure, Technology and Services sectors. Shashi Ruia was also awarded the Business India Businessman of the Year Award 2010.
