Delhi air bad for second day in a row: Action on polluting vehicles, ₹164 crore challan issued in 53 days

Pollution levels in Delhi have come down. According to data from private weather agency AQI.in, Delhi recorded AQI- 346 at 7 am on Monday. On Sunday too, the average AQI was 304. An AQI of less than 400 is considered in the 'very poor' category. Till 2 days ago, Delhi's air was recorded in severe category i.e. above 400.

Delhi Traffic Police is constantly working to curb pollution. The traffic police has increased strictness against vehicles plying without Pollution Control Certificate (PUC). According to traffic police data, challans worth Rs 164 crore have been issued on 1.64 lakh vehicles between October 1 and November 22 i.e. in 53 days.

Since implementation of GRP-4 from November 18, 20,743 challans have been issued so far due to lack of PUCC. Besides this, 736 old vehicles were confiscated. 13,762 non-target trucks were turned back at Delhi borders since October 15. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Shashank Jaiswal has appealed to vehicle owners to be responsible and get a valid PUCC in view of rising pollution in Delhi.

  • 42 of the world's 50 most polluted cities are in India. Most of these are from North India. Experts consider stubble burning and construction work to be the biggest cause of this pollution.
  • Due to this pollution, the health of 87 crore people of the country is at risk. On peak days in winter, air pollution levels in India are 100 times higher than the WHO standard.
  • The Center launched the National Clean Air Program in 2019. The aim was to improve air quality in 131 cities. At the same time, an analysis by the Climate Trends Institute showed that the air in 114 cities had worsened.
