Swaroop Says: Finding happiness in the present

We just celebrated New Year. There are still echoes of celebrations, resolutions and new beginnings in the air, but when I think about it now, some thoughts come to mind – not just for the New Year, but for every day, for all the years to come. These thoughts are worth keeping with us, because they have the ability to dictate how we live, feel and experience happiness. In today's fast-paced world, many people live under constant pressure, be it career-related, family roles, or social interactions. We are often so busy planning the future or grappling with the past that we overlook the beauty, the grandeur of the present. I am reminded of a friend of mine who admitted not long ago that he felt like life was a series of checklists – one task completed, another task started, c'mon, one task completed! He hardly spared a moment to savor the simple joys around him that were indeed real moments of happiness. It reminds us that happiness is not a destination, something we arrive at after ticking all the right boxes. Happiness resides in a calm mind. Real happiness often lies in finding peace with oneself in the midst of life's ups and downs, living unburdened by past regrets or future worries. Think about how we deal with challenges. Everyone has a unique journey, punctuated by moments of triumph and disappointment. A friend of mine recently lost his job, a position he had worked in for years. At first he was completely devastated. He himself was questioning his moral values and struggling to imagine what to do next. However, in time, he accepted the change, seeing it as a stepping stone to something greater. He saw it as an opportunity to reinvent himself. Finally advanced in career. As a result he was more satisfied than he had ever felt before. This situation reminded me that life is not always in our control and that unexpected turns—whether pleasant or challenging—provide us with valuable resources for growth. We cannot choose our circumstances, but we can certainly choose how we respond to them. Mistakes and failures are also necessary, they can shape our adaptability. Everything teaches us a lesson. It guides us to a greater understanding of ourselves and what is truly important. Life is ultimately unpredictable. We cannot control the situations we face, but we can choose how we respond to them. Challenges test our patience and determination. It takes us out of our comfort zone and prepares us to accept new circumstances. Happiness does not come from avoiding challenges, but from being able to face them. Happiness is not just about achieving goals or material possessions. When joy is felt because of achievements and rewards, true happiness is understood. As we travel, we often meet people, experiences and even failures that change us completely. Another important aspect of happiness is to let go of comparisons and learn to live in harmony with others without resentment or jealousy. Recently at a function I met someone who has it all – a successful career, a loving family and a high lifestyle that many would envy. On the inside, she is struggling with discomfort. Constantly comparing herself to others, for whom she is doing 'good'. This interview showed that material success and external achievements do not necessarily lead to real happiness. Sometimes it gives temporary satisfaction, but true satisfaction is felt from within. We must also recognize the importance of relationships in the pursuit of happiness. This joy is shared with others – family, friends, and everyone we meet for a while. However, life is indeed fleeting and expressing love in public can be one of the most meaningful actions. There was a time when I hesitated to say anything to anyone close to me. That's because they are important to me and I used to fear that they might weaken me. It's hard to put into words the relief and connection I felt when I finally adopted it. In short, life is a journey full of both trials and beautiful moments. We must embrace every experience, live in the present and let go of excessive expectations. Let's head into the new year not just with resolutions to achieve more, but with a commitment to enjoy each day, appreciate the small moments, and spread kindness. Happiness is not a future goal but a choice, which we experience moment by moment with ourselves and the people around us.}
