    For Development: What Can Today's Youth Do?

    Hasmukh Patel

    I want to draw the attention of the youth to the fact that there is an opportunity to contribute in fields other than the will service. A government worker has the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives on a grand scale. That is true but there is a lot of opportunity to contribute in the private sector as well. The vehicles we travel in are built by private sector engineers. More than half of our banking is in private sector hands. Although the responsibility of building roads is with the government, it is done by the private sector. This year the Government of India has allocated a budget of around eleven lakh crores for building infrastructure facilities. But it will be built by private companies. Many works which were previously done by the government are now done by the private sector. In that the private sector earns profit but that too eventually goes into someone's pocket and is ultimately used for the development of the country through savings and investment. Many services have improved since being taken over by the private sector. Sectors like education and health that should really be handled by the government are also rapidly being taken over by the private sector. If a doctor working in the private sector gives correct advice and treatment to the patient, that is also a service. An honest man is needed in every field. If it were not so, what would we do to find an honest lawyer, doctor or journalist? A bona fide teacher builds three to four generations. The position of my 3rd-4th standard teacher was higher than the village sarpanch. A teacher in the village next to me worked all his life and four generations of the village remained illiterate. Even if private schools make profit but conduct business with integrity, they can produce honest citizens and professionals of tomorrow. How can we be dishonest if we expect honesty from others? One often hears that honest people have to suffer a lot because not everyone has the triplet to be honest. Such people prefer to blame their dishonesty on the environment. Honesty is indeed a matter of personal choice and does not depend on environment, otherwise why would one person be honest and another dishonest in the same environment? If we know that no one else is responsible for our honesty or dishonesty but ourselves, even if we are not 100% honest, we feel the need to rein in our dishonesty, sometimes the inner soul stings. The belief that it is difficult to be honest in government is similar to the belief that honest business cannot be done in our country. Honesty is expected and possible in every area of life. When Gandhiji started politics through the path of truth and non-violence, no one would have thought that politics would take place in this way. Even in the private sector there are companies that work with integrity. Not all people working in government are honest, not all companies or people working in every company are honest. Just as not all people in government are dishonest, not all people working in the private sector are dishonest. But there are valuable people in every place and time. Society is bright because of them. The question is, what do we have to choose, values or devalues? }
