This is not just news but a warning to parents who allow their children under 18 to drive without a license.
During 2023, 9,489 children under the age of 18 died in road accidents, meaning the country lost 26 children every day. This is 5.49% of the total number of people who lost their lives in accidents throughout the year.
Tragically, 2,537 of these children died while driving (without a license) meaning nearly 7 'underage drivers' lose their lives every day. In accidents, 4,242 children died as passengers, while 2,232 children were crushed on the roads while walking.

Bhaskar has compiled this data from various states. According to these statistics, 54,568 deaths occurred due to not wearing a helmet in 2023.
The number of child deaths in 2023 will be lower than in 2022 The number of children dying in road accidents is 39 less than in 2022. During 2022, 9,528 children lost their lives in road accidents. An average of 55 road accidents are still taking place every hour in the country. In which 20 people have lost their lives.
Compared to 2022, road accidents have increased by 4.2% and deaths by 2.6% in 2023. UP accounted for the highest number of deaths in the country at 13.7% and Tamil Nadu remained number-1 in the number of road accidents for the sixth consecutive year. If we look at age-wise road accidents during the year 2023, the highest 66.4% deaths occurred in the age group of 18-45 years.
People under the age of 35 account for 50.5% of the total deaths. 31.5% of those killed in road accidents were urban and 68.5% were rural. 85.8% were male and 14.2% were female.
Deaths due to potholes increased by 16% in one year
- During 2023, 33,827 (7%) people who did not have a valid driving license died in road accidents across the country.
- 44,841 deaths (26%) in accidents occurred in vehicles older than 10 years.
- Amid government claims to repair potholes on roads, 2,161 people lost their lives in accidents during the year, 16.4% more than in 2022 (1,856).
- Overloaded vehicles caused 27,810 accidents, resulting in 12,154 deaths.
- During the year 2023, 68,783 cases of hit and run were reported, in which 31,209 people lost their lives and 54,574 people were seriously injured.
- Delhi has the highest number of deaths due to accidents at 1,457. Bengaluru (915) is second, followed by Jaipur (849).
