The government said on Monday that passengers on flights will be able to use internet services through Wi-Fi after getting the approval. The use of electronic devices will be allowed after the aircraft reaches an altitude of 3,000 meters in Indian airspace.
This clarification from the government came under the new Flight and Maritime Connectivity (Amendment) Rules, 2024. According to the Department of Telecommunication, now air passengers will be able to get internet service through wifi during the flight. However, passengers will be able to access internet services through Wi-Fi only after reaching an altitude of 3 thousand meters during the flight. This is being done so that there is no disruption to ground telecom services. This order of the Government of India is valid only for air passengers in Indian airspace.
Now as per the new rule, even after reaching this height, internet service through Wi-Fi will be provided only when allowing the use of electronic devices.
The captain has the right to turn Wi-Fi on or off in flight
The flight captain will have the authority to turn the Wi-Fi on or off. Also the Wi-Fi will be on only when the aircraft is at a stable speed. Also, it has to be closed during take-off or landing.
