Pakistan army chief's tenure extended: to be 5 years, not 3; Davao- Shahbaz government's decision to lure the army

The tenure of Army Chief in Pakistan has now been increased from 3 years to 5 years. The government of Pakistan has amended the law on Monday. Along with this, the current Army Chief General Asim Munir will also hold this post till 2027. Earlier his term was to end in 2025 next year.

Apart from the Army Chief, the tenure of other senior commanders of the Pakistan Army has also been extended. Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif proposed amendments to the Pakistan Army Act 1952. It has been passed by Speaker of the House Ayaz Sadiq.

According to news agency Reuters, the Shahbaz government's move is being seen as an attempt to woo senior army officers. According to Geo News, it took about 16 minutes to pass the amendment in the Senate.

Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif proposed amendments to the Pakistan Army Act 1952.

The MP of Imran's party said – the law is not in the interest of the country

This amendment is being considered as a big blow for former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party. In fact, Imran holds the army responsible for his ouster from power. They have also demanded action against them.

During a session in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub, an MP from Imran's party PTI, said that passing a law without debate in Parliament is actually like trampling it. This is not good for both the country and our army. MPs from Khan's party criticized the bill during the Parliament session.

People in Imran's party hold the army responsible for removing him from power. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in jail since August, has had several disagreements with senior army officers. He accused senior army officers of removing him from power in 2022.

Imran Khan has repeatedly accused Army Chief General Asim Munir of conspiring to topple his government.

Imran said- Jungleraj in Pakistan, Army Chief is its king

Khan's party won the most seats in the February elections, but still could not prove a majority. Imran's own party leader Fawad Chaudhary had said a few months ago that Khan could become Prime Minister if he deals with the army.

In such a situation, PM Shahbaz is in danger from those who brought him back to power. Earlier, Imran had said that Jungle Raj is going on in Pakistan. The king of this jungle is Army Chief General Asim Munir. Everything that happens here is done at his behest.
