Squirrel death issue raised in US election: Officials kill for fear of rabies, Musk says – Trump will protect such animals

Two days before the presidential election in the United States, a squirrel has become a topic of discussion in the election campaign. In fact, the squirrel named 'Peanut', which went viral on social media, was killed by authorities in New York on Saturday (November 2). The squirrel was caught during a raid on its owner's home, The Guardian reported.

Authorities received multiple complaints that a man named Mark Longo kept a squirrel and a raccoon. Symptoms of rabies-like disease have been observed in these animals. Officers raided Mark's home on October 30 after repeated complaints.

Peanut has 5 lakh followers on social media.

Vance said – Trump is saddened by the death of Peanut Both animals were euthanized for rabies testing, CBS News quoted officials as saying. Other animals and people who have come in contact with them are also being tested. Since the squirrel's death, presidential candidate Donald Trump and his vice-presidential running mate JD Vance have made it a campaign issue.

Vance said Peanut's death is a testament to the priorities of the Biden administration. As soon as Trump got the information about this, he felt very bad. This is the same government that lets thousands of illegal immigrants into the country every year, and now they want us to not even have pets.

Mark shared several photos and videos of Peanut on social media.

Musk said – the Biden administration is stupid and heartless Billionaire Elon Musk, who is supporting Trump in the election, has called the Biden administration stupid and heartless. The Tesla CEO took to social media to express his grief over Peanut's death and said he would protect the squirrel if Trump became president.

Mark also opened the Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary in April 2023 in the name of Peanut. The sanctuary now houses 300 animals, including horses, goats and many others.
