Adani to cut power if Bangladesh doesn't pay: 4 days time given, supply halved; ₹ 7,118 crore outstanding

Adani Power has given Bangladesh four days to clear the outstanding payment of power bills. The company has already halved Bangladesh's power supply. Group company Adani Power Jharkhand Limited (APJL) has taken the step due to non-payment of dues of $846 million (about Rs 7,118 crore).

According to data from Bangladesh Power Grid, APJL has cut power supply since Thursday night. Due to these cuts, Bangladesh faced a power shortage of more than 1,600 megawatts (MW) overnight. The 1,496 MW Bangladeshi plant is now operating at 700 MW.

The letter was written to PDB on 27 October

Last week on Sunday (October 27), Adani Power sent a letter to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) asking it to pay the dues by October 30. The company said that if the payment is not made on time, the power supply under the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) will be stopped from October 31.

Bangladesh said the payment is pending because the company has increased the charge

Bangladesh Electricity Board said that we have paid the old bills. But since July, Adani's charges have risen to more than $22 million per week. While PDB is paying around $18 million, the balance is increasing. A PDB official said the payment could not be made to the Agriculture Bank last week due to shortage of dollars, due to which the bank could not issue a letter of credit.
