Sinwar was arrested in 1989 for the kidnapping and murder of two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinians. At that time Yahya was 19 years old. The case went on. He was later sentenced to life imprisonment.
However, Sinwar was also freed in 2011 in the exchange of over 1,000 prisoners in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. By then, Sinwar had spent almost 22 years in prison.
