A year's study break after 10th in Ireland…: Teenagers learning theatre, new languages; It was this that gave Murphy, an Oscar winner, a chance in films

There is a unique year in the Irish education system, called the 'Transition Year'. This year is designed not only to give students a break from the academic curriculum but also to add new dimensions to their lives. The hiatus produced stars such as Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy of Peaky Blinders fame, and Paul Maskall, best known for his roles in Ordinary People and Gladiator II. This break has changed the lives of thousands of students so far.

In fact, after the three-year junior cycle in Irish schools students have two options: either to enter directly into the senior cycle, or to experience a 'transition year'. This fourth year gives students a one-year break from traditional studies. There is no special course during this period. Each school decides for itself what kind of experiences and opportunities it will offer its students during this period.

Kishog Community College principal Niall Heyer says that during the transition year at his school, students are taught nine-week courses in subjects such as Chinese language, folklore and law. Apart from this, there is also a workshop called 'BodyWrite' which is based on relationships and friendship. Other options include aviation, art, coding, car maintenance, political participation and boxing.

Paul Meskel took part in the school musical 'Phantom of the Opera' during his transition year. Recalling that experience, he says- 'I was a part of a sports team. In such a situation, there was no question of auditioning for a musical. But at that time everyone had to audition so I thought why not give it my best.' His acting career started from here. Cillian Murphy also attended theater workshops during her transition year, which introduced her to the world of acting.
