Independence holidays canceled in Bangladesh: Mujibur Rahman mourning day holiday also cancelled; Hasina's party said – they will celebrate Jinnah's birthday

The government of Mohammad Yunus in Bangladesh has announced the cancellation of 8 public holidays related to Independence and Foundation Day. Two of the most important dates include March 7 and August 15.

On March 7, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh, united the entire country against the Pakistani army by giving a speech. This day is remembered there as the day of blowing the bugle of independence. At the same time, mourning is observed on 15 August in Bangladesh.

On this day in 1975, some army officers of Bangladesh broke into the house of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and killed him. Mourning was observed there on this day. The decision to cancel these two days' leave has been taken in a meeting of Yunus' advisers.

Among those who took this decision are those who started the protest against Sheikh Hasina. Which later led to his ouster.

Awami League said – this illegal government is erasing history Sheikh Hasina's daughter Sheikh Hasina's party Awami League has opposed the cancellation of holidays. The party wrote on its Facebook page that the illegitimate government wants to destroy the history of building Bangladesh. They want to impose the ideology of Pakistan in the country.

The government does not consider Sheikh Mujib as the father of the nation. He will now celebrate Jinnah's birthday. Nahid Islam, who became part of the interim government and the face of Sheikh Hasina's opposition, said – the history of the country did not start from 1952. We have fought in 1947, 1971, 1990 and 2024 too. We have fought many freedom battles.

Sheikh Hasina came to India after anti-government protests.

Warrant issued against Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh's International Criminal Tribunal on Thursday issued arrest warrants against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 45 others. This includes the leaders of Hasina's Awami League. The warrant has been issued in connection with alleged offenses in the students' agitation.

The tribunal arrested these 46 people including Hasina and directed them to appear before the tribunal by November 18.

Bangladesh's interim government said in August that it would prosecute those involved in the killings during student protests against Hasina's government at the International Criminal Tribunal.

More than 700 people were killed in anti-Hassi protests.

India's Independence Day and Bangladesh's Mourning Day together While India celebrates Independence Day on August 15, neighboring Bangladesh observes a national day of mourning. The reason is the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman which was done 48 years ago. Mujib ur Rehman was the founder of Bangladesh.

On August 15, 1975, army officers surrounded his house and shot him dead. Since then 15th August is observed as National Day of Mourning in Bangladesh.
