India's aging population has increased the median age: from 24 to 29; Growth is projected at 1% in 2024, the lowest in 73 years

India is the fourth youngest country in the world. In this list, Nigeria is first, Philippines second and Bangladesh third. But worryingly, the country is also aging rapidly.

The country's median age has increased to 28-29 years in 2024, from just 24 years in 2021. This means that the number of old people in the population is increasing rapidly and the number of young people is decreasing.

The biggest reason for this is that the country's population growth rate will reach 1% in 2024, the slowest since 1951. It was highest in 1972 with 2.2%.

In 2021 this growth rate was 1.63%. The population of the country was 121.1 crore in 2011 which has now increased to 142 crore. A recent research report on population by SBI has made these predictions.

What is the proportion of which age group in the country's population?

Age class 1991 2001 2011 2024*
0-14 37.2 35.3 30.9 24.3
15-59 55.4 56.9 60.7 65.0
60+ 7.3 7.7 8.4 10.7

All figures in %, figures for 2024 are projected…

The share of working people aged 15-59 in the country's total population is set to reach 65% by 2024. It was 55.4% in 1991, 56.9% in 2001 and 60.7% in 2011.

If we look at the statistics, in 2024 there will be 34 crore people in the age group of 0-14 years, 91 crore people in the age group of 15-59 years and 15 crore people above the age of 60 years.
