Hearing on Kejriwal-Atishi plea in defamation case adjourned: Supreme Court to hear on September 30, BJP leader filed defamation case

Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accused the BJP in a tweet on 8 December 2018 of siphoning votes from the Agarwal community, following which BJP leader Rajiv Babbar filed a defamation case against Kejriwal and AAP leaders.

In February 2020, the trial court declared Kejriwal's and AAP leaders' comments as defamatory. In 2020 itself, Kejriwal filed an application against this in the Delhi High Court and sought closure of the case.

On September 2, 2024, the High Court dismissed the Kejriwal-Atishi petition, against which Kejriwal and Atishi approached the Supreme Court, which was adjourned to Friday.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhati heard arguments from advocate Sonia Mathur for Rajeev Babbar. Mathur said that he could not file a reply in this matter today as the matter came to his notice only on Thursday.

Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Atishi and Kejriwal, said that they are ready to present arguments on September 30. After this, the court scheduled the hearing of the case for September 30.

The picture is from September 17. Arvind Kejriwal along with Minister Atishi reached Lt Governor VK Saxena's house to tender his resignation. Meanwhile, it was claimed to form a new government under the leadership of Atishi.

The High Court said- Kejriwal tried to tarnish the image of BJP The Delhi High Court on September 2 said that the statements by Kejriwal and other AAP leaders were defamatory and aimed at tarnishing the BJP's image for political gain. With this comment, the High Court refused to quash the defamation case.

Along with this, the court asked Kejriwal, Atishi and other party members to appear before the trial court. AAP leaders filed a petition in the Supreme Court against this decision of the High Court.

Kejriwal said- BJP lost the votes of Agarwal community Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal claimed in a tweet on December 8, 2018 that the Agarwal community has a total of eight lakh votes in Delhi. About four lakh votes have been deducted by BJP. That is 50 percent vote. Till date this community was staunch voter of BJP. This time they are upset because of demonetisation and GST, BJP has cut off their votes.

Kejriwal's statement was supported by many AAP leaders including Atishi. After this, Rajeev Babbar alleged that Kejriwal was falsely accusing the BJP of removing voters' names from the voter list. The BJP also alleged that Kejriwal tried to incite people against the BJP on social media.
