Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that cyber crime is a matter of global concern on Monday during his visit to America. Yesterday on Tuesday, the central government has taken a huge step against cyber fraud by shutting down 6 lakh mobile phones. The Union Home Ministry has also blocked 65 thousand Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) of cyber fraudsters and around 800 applications of cyber frauds.
The National Cyber Crime Report (NCRP) received more than 1 lakh investment scam complaints in 2023. 17 thousand police complaints of this type of fraud were also registered across the country. From January 24 to September 24, 6000 complaints of digital arrest, 20,043 of trading scams, 62,687 of investment scams and 1725 of dating scams were received.
In order to curb the increasing cases of cyber fraud, Cyber Wing has frozen 3.25 lakh debit accounts of fraudsters in the last 4 months. Similarly, 3401 social media, websites, WhatsApp groups used in committing cyber crimes have also been closed. In the last few years, 8.50 lakh cyber victims have been saved from being cheated along with saving Rs 2800 crore from cyber fraud. It may be mentioned that citizens can file online complaints against cyber crimes on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Measures taken by Central Government to prevent cyber crime
- A national level coordination center has been set up to investigate cyber crime related cases across the country.
- Facilitating easy registration of complaints.
- Assisting law enforcement agencies to prevent cyber crime.
- Identifying cybercrime activities and patterns.
- To promulgate guidelines to create awareness among people about cyber crime.
- Procedures for identifying fake digital platforms
- Sending alerts about digital arrests.
- Cyber Commando Training. 5000 cyber commandos will be trained in next 5 years. Which will work to protect people from fraud.
Telegram will share numbers of suspicious users with governments Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has said that the phone numbers and IP addresses of suspicious users will be given to the government. The announcement comes two weeks after Durov's arrest in France. Telegram has started using AI and a team of moderators to remove dark content from search results. This team will share user data if necessary.
