Army officer assaulted, fiancee sexually assaulted: Odisha CM orders judicial probe; Report sought within 60 days

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Mazi has ordered a judicial inquiry into the assault on an army officer and sexual harassment of his fiancee at Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar. High Court Justice Chittaranjan Das will preside over the judicial inquiry. The government has sought an inquiry report from them within 60 days.

The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) gave this information on September 23 at 1:21 am. According to the statement, the government has also appealed to the High Court to monitor the investigation being conducted by the crime branch of the police.

At 1 am on September 15, the army officer and his fiancee were returning after closing the cafe. In the meantime, some youths assaulted and misbehaved with him on the way. The couple reached Bharatpur police station with a complaint. There the policemen locked up the army officer and sexually assaulted his fiancee.

The woman is the daughter of former Brig. The police arrested him on the charge of misdemeanor. The woman disclosed this after getting bail from the High Court on September 19. After this, 5 policemen were suspended. A case has been registered against him.

Army officer and his fiancee face 5 serious charges against the police

  • According to the army officer's fiancee, when she tried to file a complaint at the police station, a woman policeman in civil dress started abusing her. After some time, some more policemen reached the police station in a patrol vehicle. They locked up the army officer.
  • When the victim said they could not keep the army officer in custody, it was illegal, two women policemen grabbed her hair and started beating her. A woman policeman tried to grab his neck.
  • The women policemen tied the victim's hands with her jacket. Tied the legs with the dupatta of the lady constable. After a while a postal official came. He removed the woman's undergarments and started kicking her chest.
  • Then the in-charge inspector came. He pulled down the victim's pants. Then he pulled down his pants, showed his private parts and uttered obscenities.
  • Four policemen grabbed him and dragged him to a cell, an army officer said. There he removed his pants. Took all the stuff. He was illegally kept inside the cell till 3 am. Meanwhile, for 30 minutes, the sound of her fiancee's screams could be heard from the lobby. The police then arrested the fiance on charges of rape.

Biju Janata Dal has announced Bhubaneswar bandh on Tuesday, September 24 in protest against this incident. BJD MLA Arun Kumar Sahu said the bandh will be for six hours from 6 am to noon on Tuesday.

Police allegation- Army officer and fiancee were drunk

The accused policemen include Inspector-in-Charge Dinkrishna Mishra.

Bharatpur police said that the army officer and his fiancee were drunk. They reached the Bharatpur police station on the night of September 15 and ransacked it. Computers and furniture were broken. Officers on duty were also attacked. So he was arrested.

Youths who commit misdemeanors on the road get bail within 4 hours On the other hand, the police arrested 7 accused youths who assaulted and molested the couple on the night of September 20. However, he got bail from the court after 4 hours. All the accused are engineering students.

The accused were produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class-II (JMFC) court late on September 20-21, where they were granted bail. Additional DCP Krishna Prasad Das said that 11 mobile phones and one vehicle have been seized from the accused.

After this all the youths pushed the army officer. The debate continues. A group of young men tell the woman that she is playing the victim card. He is told that there is no need to show so much confidence. After this the army officer puts his girlfriend in the car.
