22 rail accidents in two months in country: Attempted train derailment in Gujarat-Bihar-UP in two days; Center will change railway act, sedition case will be filed

A conspiracy was hatched to derail a JTTN goods train near Prempur station in Kanpur. A small cylinder was placed on the track. At around 6 am on Sunday morning, the loco pilot on the loop line applied the emergency brake as soon as he saw the cylinder and stopped the train 10 feet before the cylinder.

This is the 22nd attempt to derail a train in 57 days in the country. Earlier on September 20, railway tracks were tampered in Surat. The investigation of the case has been handed over to the NIA. On the other hand, the engine of the Muzaffarpur-Pune special train derailed on Saturday night at Muzaffarpur Junction in Bihar. The accident took place when the train started moving without getting the signal.

The Central Government is going to amend the Railway Act in view of the increasing attempts to derail trains. Notification in this regard may be issued soon. Under this, a case of sedition will be registered for conspiring to cause an accident. There will also be provision for punishment ranging from life imprisonment to death penalty.

Another train derailment conspiracy in Kanpur in 14 days

Senior railway officials, RPF, GRP and police officials reached the spot as soon as the information about the cylinder being kept at Kanpur's Prempur station was received. Officials said that the goods train was going from Kanpur to Prayagraj. A 5 kg cylinder placed on the track was empty. This is the fifth train derailment conspiracy in UP in 38 days. Earlier on September 8, a conspiracy was hatched to derail the Kalindi Express in Kanpur itself with a full cylinder.

6 wheels of engine derailed in Muzaffarpur, train 1 hour late

Due to accident, Muzaffarpur-Pune special train departed 1 hour late.

Six wheels of the engine of the Muzaffarpur-Pune special train derailed. The derailed engine came with the Pune-Muzaffarpur special train. From platform 4, the engine was to be connected to the Muzaffarpur-Pune special train. Meanwhile Bhagalpur-Muzaffarpur intercity was coming to the junction. Due to which the engine was not signaled and moved forward without a signal.

Officials examined the cylinder.

Provision for punishment ranging from life imprisonment to death penalty for train derailment The current provisions of the Railway Act provide for a maximum sentence of 10 years and fine under Section 151 of the Railway Act-1989 if conspiracy to cause a railway accident is proved. Now preparations are underway to add a sub-clause to this Act to bring it under the category of sedition.

According to Home Ministry sources, barricading on railway tracks is a conspiracy to mishap. If there is an accident and loss of life due to it, the accused can also be charged with mass murder.

This can have provisions ranging from life imprisonment to death penalty. Legal advice is being sought in this regard. New provisions in this regard may be notified soon. Sources said, the newly changed rules will not be effective if rail traffic is affected due to protests etc.

Officials reached the spot to investigate.

Cameras will be installed at sensitive places and railway engines A Railway Board official said that pilot trains are being conducted before passing selected passenger trains through sensitive areas to counter any conspiracy to erect barricades on the tracks. Along with this, investigation of police and gangmen on the railway track has been increased.

Railways is preparing to install cameras at sensitive places in the coming days. There is also a plan to install cameras on railway engines, so that real time monitoring can be done. In such situation in case of obstruction on the track, the drivers will be able to stop the train in advance.
