Port Blair to be called Sri Vijayapuram henceforth: Govt renames capital of Andaman-Nicobar, says Amit Shah – PM resolves to rid country of symbols of slavery

The government on Friday renamed Port Blair, the capital of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to Sri Vijayapuram. Home Minister Amit Shah gave this information on social media. Amit Shah said – Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resolve to free the country from all symbols of slavery, today the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to name Port Blair as 'Sri Vijayapuram'. Earlier, on 23 January 2023, on Netaji's 126th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Modi had decided to name 21 islands of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands after Paramvir Chakra winners. On 28 December 2018, Havelock Island, Neil Island and Ross Island in Andaman and Nicobar were renamed. Havelock Island has been named as Swaraj Dwip, Neil Island as Shahid Dwip and Ross Island as Netaji Subhash Chandra Dwip. Amit Shah wrote on social media – Inspired by Prime Minister Modi's resolve to free the country from all symbols of slavery, today the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to name Port Blair as 'Sri Vijayapuram'. The name 'Sri Vijayapuram' represents the struggle for our freedom and the contribution of Andaman and Nicobar in it. This island has a prominent place in the history and independence of our country. The island, which played a naval role in the Chola Empire, is today poised to boost the country's security and development. This island is also the place where Netaji Subhash Chandra Boseji hoisted the tricolor for the first time Netaji first hoisted the tricolor here This is the place where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose first hoisted the tricolor after the independence of the country. Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters spent several years as punishment in the cellular jail here. He was fighting for the freedom of the country. PM Modi visited Port Blair in 2018 Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public meeting at Port Blair's Marina Park to mark the 75th anniversary of the hoisting of the tricolor on Indian soil by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Meanwhile, he appealed to all the people to turn on the flash light of their mobiles. He asked to show respect to Netaji by turning on the mobile flash light.
