England lead by 256 in Lord's Test: Atkinson and Root score centuries, Fernando takes 5 wickets; Sri Lanka all out for 196 runs

The second match of the Test series between England and Sri Lanka is being played at Lord's Stadium in London. England fast bowler Gus Atkinson scored a century on the second day of the match on Friday. With Atkinson's century, the team scored 427 runs in the first innings. Sri Lanka opened the first innings, but the team could only score 196 runs. England started their second innings the very next day, the team scored 25 runs for the loss of 1 wicket. Thus they currently have a lead of 256 runs. Joe Root scored his 33rd career century for England on the first day of the Test. He played an innings of 143 runs. Fast bowler Asitha Fernando took 5 wickets from Sri Lanka. England lost 7 wickets on the first day England scored 358 runs losing 7 wickets on the first day. The next day Gus Atkinson scored 74 runs and Matthew Potts led his innings with a score of 20 runs. Atkinson continued to score quickly and scored his first career century. Atkinson was dismissed for 118 off 115 balls. He shared an 85-run partnership with Potts. Before this he also shared a partnership of 92 runs with Joe Root. Ratnaik took an excellent diving catch and Atkinson was dismissed for England's 9th wicket. Asitha Fernando bowled a short pitch towards him, Atkinson played a pull shot. As the ball was heading for the boundary, Milan Ratnaik dived in the air behind to take a brilliant catch. Atkinson hit 14 fours and 4 sixes in an innings of 118 runs. Fernando took 5 wickets in the end Matthew Potts scored 21 runs, Ollie Stone 15 runs and Shoaib Bashir 7 runs for England. The team scored 427 runs after batting 102 overs. Fast bowler Asitha Fernando took 5 wickets from Sri Lanka. Milan Ratnayake and Lahiru Kumara took 2-2 each while Prabhath Jayasuriya took one wicket. Sri Lanka got off to a poor start in the first session and by the end of the first session, Sri Lanka had also started the first innings. The team scored 32 runs after losing 2 wickets after 9.1 overs. Nishan Madushka and Dimuth Karunaratne were dismissed with 7 runs each. Pathum Nisanka was not out scoring 10 runs. Chris Woakes and Ollie Stone took 1 wicket each for England. Sri Lanka lost 5 more wickets in the second session Sri Lanka extended their innings in the second session with a score of 32/2. The team lost 7 wickets till the score of 129 runs. Kamindu Mendis remained unbeaten along with Prabhat Jayasuriya after scoring 26 runs for the team. Milan Ratnayake scored 19, Dinesh Chandimal 23, Angelo Mathews 22 and Pathum Nisanka scored 12 runs. 3 Sri Lankan batsmen could not even cross the mark of 10 runs. Sri Lanka 196 all out, Mendis' fifty Kamindu Mendis held one end in the third session. He scored a fifty and along with the taillanders took the team close to 200. However, Sri Lanka could score only 196 runs. Mendis was dismissed after scoring 74 runs. Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Ollie Stone and Matthew Potts got 2 wickets each for England. Shoaib Bashir also had a breakthrough, when a batter was run out. England lost a wicket England also started their second innings in the third session. The team scored 25 runs after losing one wicket after 7 overs. Ben Duckett was unbeaten with 25 runs and Ollie Pope with 2 runs. Dan Lawrence was the victim of Lahiru Kumara scoring 7 runs. England batted first after losing the toss on the first day after Joe Root scored a century on the first day. The team lost 6 wickets for 216 runs, but Root remained at one end.
