CJI said- Justice Hima is a strong defender of women's rights: On Farewell Justice Hima said- A woman judge should be appointed in my place; Appreciated by CJI

Hima Kohli, the 8th woman justice of the Supreme Court, had her last working day in the court on Friday. At the farewell ceremony, he requested CJI DY Chandrachud to appoint a woman judge in his place after his retirement. CJI Chandrachud said- Senior lawyers should train and recruit more women lawyers. Once there are equal opportunities in the legal profession, more women will become lawyers like Justice Kohli. Justice Kohli is set to retire on September 1 after serving the Supreme Court for three years. Justice Kohli has been in the legal profession for 40 years. He served as a lawyer for 22 years and as a judge for 18 years. He was serving as a judge in the Supreme Court from 31 August 2021. CJI said – Hima is a strong defender of women's rights Praising Justice Kohli, CJI Chandrachud said that Hima is not only a woman judge but also a strong defender of women's rights. It was a pleasure to sit with Justice Kohli. We have talked and discussed very serious ideas. There have been many times when he has supported me. Kapil Sibal said – Even after fighting big cases, women are not getting a chance In Justice Hima Kohli's farewell ceremony, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Chief and Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal requested that women should get a proper place in the judiciary. He told the CJI that even after fighting big cases in law firms, women lawyers are not getting a chance. Such talented women should be appointed as High Court Judges. If women can become Prime Minister and President, they can also become judges in Supreme Court and High Court. CJI Kapil agreed with Sibal's views. Who is Justice Hima Kohli? Justice Hima Kohli completed her law studies in 1984 from the Campus Law Center of Delhi University. After this, he took training from Sunanda Bhandare, YK Sabharwal and Vijendra Jain, who were judges of the Delhi High Court. Justice Kohli became an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2006. Became a permanent judge in 2007. After this, she became the first woman Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court on 7 January 2021. CJI NV Ramana administered oath to three women as Supreme Court judges on August 31, 2021. It included Justice Kohli, BV Nagaratna and Bela M Trivedi. This is the highest number of pending cases so far. Only 27,604 pending cases have been registered in the last one year. According to a Times of India report, 38,995 new cases were filed in the Supreme Court in 2024. Out of which 37,158 cases were disposed of. The number of pending cases has increased 8 times in the last 10 years. Pending cases decreased in 2015 and 2017.
